A great book for the ballpark!

Though as the season goes on it can become a little outdated, this is a great book if you are a fan of the minor leagues. I attend many MiLB games throughout the summer and this is a book I love carrying with me. I get it nearly every year and always love thumbing through it to see who is ranked where!

Prospect Handbook is a Five-Star Ingredient for Following Minor League Baseball

There are 176 teams and 16 leagues in minor league baseball and Baseball America covers them all by profiling the top 30 prospects in each organization with the publication of its annual Prospect Handbook. Whether you are reading the approximate 200-word profile on a minor leaguer or referring to the reference tables in the back that list the top 20 prospects in each league, as well as the top draftees for the past three drafts, the book rewards you with nuggets of information for each page you read.
Each year the handbook provides new information on the players it profiles, which is a daunting task, as each year many of the same names appear on the top 30 prospect list for each organization. The handbook keeps its material fresh by documenting the progress of the prospects each year, weaving the year just completed year with the accomplishments of prior years. We can see this style at work by investigating the lead sentences for the past three years for the profiles of Kevin Plawecki, who made his debut with the Mets in 2015.
Kevin Plawecki first appeared in the 2013 handbook, after being drafted # 35 in the 2012 draft. Consequently, the 2013 handbook focused on his accomplishments during his college career as it rated him the 21st best prospect in the New York Mets organization: “Plawecki intrigued teams in the 2012 draft as an offensive-minded catcher with barrel awareness and strike-zone discipline.”
In 2014, with a year and a half of minor league baseball behind him, Plawecki dramatically moved up the prospect ladder, as the handbook rated Plawecki as the fifth best prospect and explained how his college tendencies had carried over to his professional career with these words in its profile lead: “Plawecki struck out just 29 times in three seasons at Purdue and continued to show fine bat control after signing for $1.4 million as the 35th pick in the 2012 draft.”
In 2015, once again the publication rated Plawecki the fifth best prospect in the Mets’ organization and succinctly summed up his status in its lead: “An offensive-minded catcher who signed for $1.4 million as a 2012 supplemental first-round pick, Plawecki has had no trouble adjusting to pro ball.”
As part of each profile, the handbook predicts the future for each player and is often correct. In 2014, the handbook hit a home run when it concluded its profile for Plawecki by stating “He’ll begin the 2014 season at Double-A and might make his debut the following season.”
Besides profiling the players, the handbook also includes pictures of the top ten prospects for each organization and has its writers provide their own list of the top fifty major league prospects. The handbook also does a nice job of explaining its “20-80” rating scale, with “80” being the highest rating given for a player. A rating of “80” is rare, as Byron Buxton, considered by many to be the number 1 prospect in all of prospect, received a “75” rating entering the 2015 season.
Note: The author of this book review has written two books about minor league baseball: “Six More Wins, A Team, A Town, and a Championship,” tells the story of the 2014 Eastern League Champions, the Binghamton Mets. “Celebrating 100 Years of Baseball in Greater Binghamton: Tales from the Binghamton Baseball Shrine” profiles the members of Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine, as well as documenting the history of baseball in the Greater Binghamton area. This book causes Baseball Fever

This book is a must. It contains a listing and information of the top prospects for every team and the top one hundred prospects overall. I find myself referring to this book all season long as players are called up. I look forward to getting this book every year. I even enjoy looking through the older issues and reading what they had to say about the players that made it or did not make it.
