Hiking the Road to Ruins: Daytrips and Camping Adventures to Iron Mines, Old Military Sites, and Things Abandoned in the New York City Area

In this easy to use, informative, and occasionally eccentric guidebook, David A. Steinberg blazes the trail to more than twenty-five unusual landmarks and hard-to-find destinations that are mostly within a two-hour drive of New York City. Suitable for the experienced hiker or camping adventurer—as well as anyone who has the desire to explore—Hiking the Road to Ruins includes many new ruins and historic sites to see: remnants of the two World’s Fairs in Queens, mysterious stone chambers scattered about northern Westchester County, winter adventuring in Harriman, and quarries that contain amazing artifacts.
In this new edition, Steinberg adds four additional chapters and has revised throughout the book to include detailed directions, GPS coordinates to specific sites, a hand-drawn map, and suggestions for the optimal time and season to visit. Having led many types of hikes and trips over the past fifteen years, Steinberg leaves no part of the trip unplanned. He even suggests ideal conditions for outings. An overcast day, for instance, sets up the haunted atmosphere appropriate for visiting a water tower in Mountainside, New Jersey, that has links to a murder-suicide in the 1970s.
Newcomers will gain experience as they make their way through the book, which includes a chapter on equipment and safety, detailed instructions on how to program a hand-held Global Positioning System receiver, and a glossary of terms.
Both a practical guide and a creative chronicle, Hiking the Road to Ruins will inspire everyone to hit the trail in search of adventure.

Hot To Trot
By Kay Pea
One of my favorite hiking books, & I have a slew of them. Loved the first (2007) edition so much that I drove an hour to a tiny visitor's center to see the author's presentation. Recently, while researching a hike online, I happened to discover that there's a new revised & expanded 2nd edition (2015). Didn't hesitate to order it. Am keeping the older one, too. Both books are so good that even if you didn't actually do the hikes, it would be a pleasure just to read them. The author has a great sense of humor, writes well, & provides historical information with plenty of interesting details. There's also a chapter on hike preparation & safety. The Road To Ruins is calling my name. I can hardly wait to get out there again.

An amazing hiking book!
By Jennifer Leon
A coworker lent me his 2007 copy of this book and it has become my go to for hiking ideas. My first adventure was Doodletown and the directions given were perfect. I read aloud to my boyfriend all the interesting historical tidbits Steinberg includes. The second hike we took using this book as our guide was The Pergola. It was perfect and my boyfriend proposed on that hike. So, not only is it a fun, informative hiking guide, it holds a special place in my heart. I have purchased the new revised 2015 edition to keep for myself and can't wait to try some more hikes. I highly recommend this book.

I had occasion to use this trail guide and had a great experience in Harriman Park. The guide gave explicit and clear directions to get to the destination and we found what we were looking for.
