This is a story of Tom, and this laid-off software engineers’ trip around the North end of Vancouver Island. It is a story of naivety, ineptitude, and surprisingly, success. This is book one in a series, and describes the start of my kayaking adventures. It was an excellent adventure, with bears, killer whales wolves and sea lions, to name a few. Kayaking on my own during the day, and camping on glorious (and not so glorious) beaches during the night. There are small maps showing the kayaking route, and a day by day account of what happened, with photos whenever I could manage the camera, or met someone or something worth photographing. It's not a book about kayaking technique, because I haven't got any, more a description of what can be achieved with a good level of determination and a healthy sense of fun. There's probably enough information in the book (and references) for you to decide whether you like the sound of this kind of adventure and go have one yourself!

Simple but helpful journal.

A very simply written journal. A good reminder of the dangers of traveling along the coast. It helped convince me that a splash covered canoe probably doesn't belong on the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Islands. Now where shall I go in September.

An amusing, if thin, tale of a glorious kayak adventure

This is the author's tale of a kayak journey starting in Tofino and proceeding clockwise around Vancouver Island. It's a short book, consisting of brief descriptions of each day's travels. The journey is an exercise in lunacy-- The guy seems cavalier about the challenges and safety aspects, and things could have gone very wrong for him. But he made it, and we are fortunate that he decided to share his adventure.
I really enjoyed this book. The writer is funny, and you get a sense of semi-gritty realism that I find lacking in a lot of write-ups of kayak adventuring. As noobish as he appears to be (he admits, without apology, to failing to learn how to roll, for example), the guy was enough of a seaman to successfully deal with the wild conditions that can be found on the West Coast of Vancouver island, and that's nothing to sniff at.
I recommend it. In one way it's a "don't try this at home" kind of warning tale. But on the other hand it's an adventure in the finest tradition of crazy adventuring. Worth a read.
