Duane climbed actively in the Yosemite Valley from 1987 to 1992, then went on to get a Ph.D. in American Literature at UC–Santa Cruz. Lighting Out was his first book, published two years before his seminal cult-favorite, Caught Inside: A Surfer’s Year on the Calfiornia Coast.

About the Author
Daniel Duane grew up in Berkeley, California. After obtaining his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, he quickly returned to the West Coast to climb, surf, and generally live life. He is the author of seven books and has written for a variety of publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Esquire, GQ, Men's Health, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, and Sierra.

I was a really big fan of Duane's "Caught Inside" ...

I was a really big fan of Duane's "Caught Inside", so I recently ordered this book. While very entertaining and enjoyable, it kind of was lacking in depth or character development. Not nearly as cohesive or compelling as Caught Inside...still, very enjoyable. I finished it in two days, so I did find it very engaging.
