Interactive, Rhyming Math Menu Book: Lots of Fun for Elementary School Kids!

Fun, fun, fun. Lucy Ravitch teaches practical math skills in this playful menu book, in which kids learn to add, subtract, multiply, and even calculate percentages by playing restaurant. One child is the designated waiter or waitress, taking the other child(ren)'s orders, tallying up how many of each type of pancake are ordered and multiplying the tally by the pancake price and adding up the orders. Tax can be added, and diners can figure out how much to tip, learning basic percentages and social interaction! The diners then pay, using downloadable menu book money, and receive appropriate change, using applied subtraction.

Some of the calculations were too challenging for my seven-year-olds to fully comprehend or come up with the right answer, but that didn't matter. They loved it and gained great exposure to a complex set of math problems, inspiring them to want to learn more! I can already see that when we have the hardcover, this will be a book that they will play with over and over, getting more confident with their math skills every time. Through repeat practice using the book, they will attain a base knowledge that will meet or exceed common core standards for their age.

Speaking of common core, this book is very appropriate for new learning standards promoting learning across subjects.

The menu itself is told in a very fun rhyming style, sure to draw smiles and chuckles, but also usable as an opportunity to study rhythm, meter, rhyme and syllables. The illustrations are charming and appropriate for all ages, a welcome throw-back to old-school colored pencil drawing.

Then there are the hidden recipes in the fold-outs, spurring conversations about nutrition and healthy choices (some of the pancakes are "sometimes" foods—just for a special treat, while others combine several of the food groups to make a balanced meal). In a home, kids could actually prepare the pancakes with adult supervision as a fun weekend breakfast, or in a school with a kitchen, teachers could have a lesson on making food, tying in fractions, ratios and measurement through baking.

And, of course, there are the lessons in math, currency and social interactions mentioned above.

I could easily see this not only teaching children a variety of concepts, but inspiring kids to make their own series menu books, spurring a new generation of creativity!

My kids love it and I do to. I highly recommend for elementary school: kids, parents and teachers!

Did you like to play restaurant when you were a kid?

Did you like to play "restaurant" when you were a little kid? Lucy has captured the playtime fun of most all kids, but with a twist of teaching about how to actually make the food instead of using pretend food, and you can even print out money so you don't give an empty hand of money to pay for your restaurant food. There are even order sheets which can be printed so they take real orders. I especially liked the rhyming, which teaches kids meters and the basics of rhyme. The book is worth it just for the recipes. Oh, and did I mention that the book is huge with fold-out pages for the recipes and real-life pictures, with "coated" pages so you can wipe it off. This book will give hours of fun to your children or grandchildren, or even your students if you are a teacher, while they are learning about math, counting money and giving tips, nutrition, rhyming and creative FUN FUN FUN pancake making.

Ideal for the classroom or the kitchen

As a third grade math teacher I can hardly wait to try out this book with my students! Along with the basic pancake recipe - which can easily be put together in a classroom as well as your kitchen - there are unique variations of pancakes to make with kids. The author has a website with free downloads of printables to extend the math learning. Filling out an order form and calculating the cost of the pancakes and also the change back from payment offers children a fun way to practice their addition and subtraction skills. I love using menus for math practice and this beautifully designed book is going to be a great addition to my library.

Backing every single selection in all 36 systems in 2015 resulted in 139 winners from 519 selections at a level stakes profit of 5.9% after the maximum possible 5% Betfair Commission.
Higher volume Betfair punters (with hence lower commission deductions) achieved higher level stakes profits up to 8.4%. With a stake of £50 per bet, this would have resulted in profits of between £1,537 and £2,186, depending upon the Betfair commission rate.
We chose 5 systems as “Star Systems” stating they were “for those that wish to be more selective”.
Just sticking to these highlighted 5 highest confidence “Star Systems” would have resulted in 26 winners from 119 selections and a level stakes profit of between 20.4% and 23.5%. £50 staked on each selection would have given profits of between £1,215 and £1,400. All 5 of the “Star Systems” were profitable in their own right.
2016 Volume 1 had now been published and includes 2 systems.

This book is a Classic ~ A Must-Have for the true Outdoorsman

I purchased this book first on Kindle, then came back to Amazon and purchased a print copy as well. I truly recommend getting the print version in addition to a Kindle version. As an experienced archery bear hunter with over 25 years experience and a bear in the Pope & Young Records book, my opinion is the value in the high quality photo's is truly worth the price. I like the Kindle version as I like using Kindle, but the value in stepping up and getting the print version for the high quality photo's is not to be missed. What you will learn in combining Doug's strategies and calling techniques, with gaining a deep, deep understanding of the types of terrain, age of timber stands, topography and so much more will allow you to begin finding bears in the woods. A fun read for sailors and landlubbers

Peter presents a wonderful journey about learning to sail, while unorthodoxly doing so in his newly purchased boat. These two exciting yet anxious scenarious are combined to keep the pages turning. Anyone who has every bought a boat or learned to sail will be able to relive and relate to this fun read.

Fat boat going nowhere.

This very slim volume is not a book really but an essay or a pamphlet. The author has not learned his nautical terminology very well, and offers very little in the way of instruction or inspiration. His oft professed love of being on the water, seems exaggerated because he doesn't spend whole lot of time on it. Yaremko doesn't know much about sailing or catboats, deficiencies which he details comvincingly.

The free guide is about the paleo diet, a quick run down of why it's awesome and how to successfully start by making changes to what we eat. This workout book is about calisthenic movements, very basic and effective regimens. Overall, love the books! will be checking out some of his recipe books too!

Jim Casada is a retired Winthrop University history professor who has written on outdoor-related subjects for some four decades. Over the course of his career, he has won more than 170 excellence-in-craft awards from regional and national organizations. The editor at large for Sporting Classics magazine, he writes columns for two newspapers and contributes regularly to outdoor magazines. Casada is the editor and compiler of eighteen anthologies, including four others featuring Archibald Rutledge. He is the author of nineteen original books and more than five thousand magazine and newspaper articles. Casada is currently working on a biography of Rutledge and writing a trilogy of books, Portals of Paradise, covering the people, places, and perspectives on his boyhood homeland in western North Carolina.

poorly written

Very disappointed, This book is on the NRA recommended list.
It is very poorly written. Very poor choice of words and descriptions.
Example:
When you get to the range, and you have reviewed the safe rules, "repair to the firing line"
Most is written in an 1800s lingo. One place says NEVER shoot like the cowboys in the movies, by throwing the gun from a high ready position down as you fire. Then it turns right around and says to raise the gun up next to you ear, cock the hammer as you lower the gun and then shoot!

Disapointing

Disappointing- cover reads: "...includes everything you need to know to improve upon your handgun marksmanship skills". Well, maybe - but doesn't really seem to be accurate. Book is re-prints of other articles from 40's-80's. Somewhat interesting to read- but not really an instruction manual. Information isn't organized into a useful structure for training; language used in many of the articles reads as out-of-date; no illustrations of any kind. I saw this in NRA magazine and expected more.

Technology no substitute for expert guidance

Because of my age and my progressive lenses I installed a laser on my Glock 19 before I ever shot it. At the range I did OK as far as center mass goes but my groups were not consistent. After reading this book I understood the source of my difficulties. And after practicing the tips in dry-fire practice I saw amazing improvement in my groups at the range...without using the laser. Highly recommend this book.

this is a comprehensive book for any beginner and I highly recommend it.

I'm an indoor person and I've never gone backpacking or hiking before. For someone who knows absolutely nothing, this book is a gem. I didn't know there was so much preparation required before you go backpacking. . The author also goes into the sort of food to prepare and bring for backpacking/hiking, where to find water, how to navigate with a compass and a map, how to stay safe on the trail, and even basic survival techniques. Overall, this is a comprehensive book for any beginner and I highly recommend it.

Backpacking this book provides excellent guide to packing your backpack for outdoor activities. Also there are some great survival tips by author about hiking in the wild, as well as what to be aware of that could endanger your life. My favourite chapter is that one which talks about where you can find water, from various trees. Interesting and helpful, therefore I recommend this book!

All about backpacking and hiking the right way.

I will keep this book for the next time I plan a hike. It's important to know what to take and how to pack and how to prepare and it's all here in this guide. I also felt that what it covered helps in every day life especially living in areas which may suffer earthquakes and other extreme weather conditions. For desert driving a good supply of water and even a compass and for those living in the north where they may be trapped in a car for hours in subzero temperatures the advice for hiking the trail would still apply. Easy reading and very informative and written by someone who knows his stuff.
