Climbing and the heart of stone

Incredibly compelling view into one man's journey through the terribly painful ending of a long marriage, juxtaposed with his detailed descriptions of his experiences climbing these immense granite walls in yosemite. Though it chronicles the writer's inner and outer experiences of the divorce, the relationship, and the climbing, it is a kind of love story. Early in the story of the relationship problems, the image of "a heart of stone" gets named as the time when the marriage first showed signs of trouble. I can't help but imagine the writer trying to connect to his partner's "heart of stone" as he is climbing these tall, beautiful slaps of stone, sticking his fingers, hands, elbows, feet in any crack or crevice, trying to stay connected so he can ascend. The book is a worthy journey to share in. Highly recommended.

Now this would make a great movie!

What a great writer!! You immediately feel connected to the characters. The struggles of life and perceptions of feelings communicated with words. Makes you think about your own life and focus on the most important. I'm ready for the sequel.

Bittersweet and illuminating

This had to be difficult to write, but it was a great read. I appreciated the mention of my cousin at the beginning of the book. I also think the author did a fine job of not demonizing his ex wife. The climbing chapters were great and I liked how the character of his climbing partners were filled out. Overall a fine piece of writing.
