Pinstripes and Penance- The Life Story Of John Malangone, by Michael Harrison

Professional ballplayers, including me, have a gift from God.

John Malangone, a former top prospect for the New York Yankees, is a man with remarkable talent, an impressive work ethic, and a deeply rooted fear of success.

He easily impressed Yankee scouts with his performance and trained obsessively, but was disinterested in winning the game.

A riveting biography, Malangone's story offers an unvarnished look into the Yankee organization and a young athlete's struggle with memories of a childhood tragedy. Readers will become immersed in the rich and often tumultuous culture of 1940s and 1950s Little Italy in East Harlem and get an in-depth look at a man who was finally able to rise above his struggles and make the most of his life and abilities. John s trials and triumphs involve stories with baseball legends such as Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Casey The Old Perfessor Stengel, Mickey Mantle, Earl Weaver, and Billy Martin.

This book is a detailed companion to the award-winning documentary about Malangone, Long Road Home, by acclaimed filmmaker Bruce Spiegel. John s life was also captured in a feature article for Sports Illustrated, and has been covered by the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and New Jersey Star-Ledger.

Review
It s common to read about athletes who never reached their potential. Success and failure are ingrained in sports. There are winners and losers.

Athletes and people in general are afraid of failure. But what about a guy who is afraid of success?

John Malangone fits that second category. He was a strapping, young 5-foot-10, 195-pounder who came of age during the 1950s, rising from the tough East Harlem section of New York. He was a catcher, a powerful hitter with a fine throwing arm. He had a boxing background and devastating punching power that made him even more intimidating. The New York Yankees saw him as an eventual replacement for Yogi Berra.

It didn t happen. Malangone had a dark family secret that tortured him, making him shun the spotlight and throw away his chance at the major leagues. That past as a 5-year-old in June 1937, he accidentally killed his 7-year-old uncle has dogged Malangone for most of his 82 years.

Harrison s experience also was personal, as he worked with Malangone at Sears during the late 1960s through 1972, giving him up-close insights.

Malangone could never overcome his childhood tragedy. Neighborhood kids teased him and called him Killer. His father hung him upside down by his ankles outside the family s fifth-floor apartment and shouted to his mother-in-law across the way, Do you want me to even the score?

It haunted Malangone. He never learned to read. As a minor-leaguer, when he was asked to provide a signature for a Louisville Slugger, he spelled his first name as Jhon. Nobody knew he was dyslexic.

That Malangone would have contact with wise guys was inevitable; he occasionally was a go-fer and ran errands for the local boss, fictionally referred to as Dom Bepp.

In 1950, playing at Jefferson Park in East Harlem, Malangone was discovered by legendary Yankees scout Paul Krichell, who signed more than 200 major-leaguers including Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford and Phil Rizzuto.

In 1955, Malangone went to spring training in St. Petersburg. While he had talent, his antics were too much for the staid Yankees to handle.

We ll never win the pennant with you, Billy Martin told him. I want you to stay away from my brothers, Mickey Mantle told him, referring to his twin siblings. You are prone to trouble.

After baseball, Malangone worked for the New York City water department before landing at Sears. He had a tense marriage and fathered five children, but was afraid to get close to them. Working two jobs kept him away from his family.

In the mid-1990s Malangone found joy again, playing in over-40 baseball leagues and helping his team win the Roy Hobbs Championship in 1995.

In the summer of 2012, Malangone took another important step, calling a family meeting with his siblings and two surviving aunts. He unburdened himself in a meeting that was more important than being famous. He was forgiven, and guilt was lifted.

John Malangone carried an incredible amount of guilt with him, and after so many years of penance, absolution never felt so sweet.

Good biography

Review:
Many sports biographies will talk about a player’s life and how he or she overcame certain obstacles such poverty, injury, depression and other such troubles in order to achieve success in athletics. This is not one of those stories. In a well-researched book by Michael Harrison, the reader learns about a former baseball player, John Malangone, who did not become a star and instead was held back by his own personal demons.

Without giving away the story or the particular demons that haunted John, it is safe to say that between a personal tragedy that befell him at a young age, his relationship with the Mob, and his own temper, it was not an easy road for the young man. Nonetheless, he was able to not only play baseball well enough to be drafted by the New York Yankees, he was also a good boxer and was able to eke out a successful career outside of sports.

He didn’t get too far in the Yankee system and only played with the major league club during spring training. However, that was enough to provide a few entertaining stories that a baseball fan would enjoy, including those with another catcher (John’s position) with the Yankees at that time. You might have heard of him – some guy whose last name was Berra, nickname of Yogi.

However, the book concentrates mainly on John’s struggles to overcome his personal demons which are illustrated as his main drawback and what keeps him from succeeding in not only baseball, but other endeavors as well. The research and stories into his life are interesting enough to keep a reader involved.

The one negative I found about the book is that it seemed to be choppy in parts and I had a hard time following it. Also, even though I enjoyed that chapter, the first chapter when John is a guest on Maury Povich’s show had me confused until later explained – why was the book starting off with this? I eventually was able to follow along, but I found that the entire structure of the book was a little difficult to follow. Nonetheless, it was a very good story of a troubled young man that readers will enjoy and will end up cheering for this man to succeed.

I wish to thank Mr. Harrison and the publisher Cincy Books for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I skim?
I did skim a few sections of the history of organized crime, but some passages with the Mob were actually some of the best parts of the book.

Pace of the book:
I found the book fairly slow over the course of the entire story for the most part. Aside from the actual tragedy that affected John, which occurs fairly early in the book, I didn’t think it was a smooth or easy read. However, John’s story kept my interest. As a result I am glad I stuck with it and finished the book.

Do I recommend?
Readers who like to read stories on people who overcome personal tragedies or difficulties will like this book. There isn’t a lot of baseball or even boxing in the book, so sports fans may be disappointed in it, but the personal story of Malangone makes up for that.

Pinstripes and Penance
By LUISE B COLLINS
If there was ever a five star book, this is it. I was a major league baseball scout for twenty years and have read a lot of baseball books and this is by far the best. Mike Harrison captures the moments in John's life perfectly. A must read for anyone who pulls for the underdog. This is not strictly a book about baseball but one man's journey through life. A must read for everyone. Brian Collins
