Change was coming to the Indianapolis 500, the nation's largest sporting event. New products, people, and technologies were turning the sport on its head. Drivers were entering the race was new rear engine cars. The drivers didn't come to Indianapolis by the usual way of racing for years on dirt tracks. New companies were getting involved and trying to earn a way into the inner circle of the sport.
But the old guard was active and potent as well. Some veteran drivers discounted the new cars or didn't feel that there was enough of an advantage to forsake the traditional ways. After all not everything new is better, especially if it hadn't been tested in the fires of competition.
The Ford Motor Company had produced a V8 engine for the Indianapolis 500 that was superior to the old Offenhauser engine. The Offy could be reliable for 500 miles but could this new engine make it all the way to the checkered flag?
Ford was also bringing along a rising star for their racing program. A very talented Californian named Dave MacDonald who had had great success in both drag racing and in sports car racing. He had even been given a car to compete with in the Daytona 500 earlier in the year. The driver had done well for his first time on the high banked stock car track.
There were veteran drivers who stuck with the older technologies, and there were veterans who could see the handwriting on the wall and decided to acquire a rear engine car. Previous race winners AJ Foyt and Parnelli Jones stuck with the front engine roadsters. Previous pole position winner Eddie Sachs wanted a rear engine car and he made it happen. Car owner and marketing genius Andy Granatelli was resurrecting the hard luck Novi engined cars, but he added a twist with some help from a British company. His idea for the large, heavy, and powerful car was to add traction with a four wheel or all wheel drive powertrain.

Easy read of a diificult year at Indy.

1964 was a dreadful year in the history of motor racing in the United States. Increases in race speeds were accelerating faster than advances in safety and the drivers would pay the price. This is an easy read of this particular Indy 500. Recommended.
