A GREAT READ!!!!

I read the entire book in one evening. I am heading to the Bahamas for the first time in a few months, and reading all of the BIG cruising guides was becoming overwhelming.

This book got me excited about our upcoming adventure.

This is an absolute MUST BUY! This book is so user friendly and explains with pictures and directions how to do almost every exercise in the gym with correct form! Not only that, but it answers almost any training question someone would have from nutrition, to fasted cardio, to supersets, to competition training. It is also perfect for anyone because it even outlines gender training differences! I am so glad that I bought this, and highly recommend it to anyone - whether you are new to a fitness lifestyle or you are a pro - THIS BOOK IS WORTH THE READ.

I train with John Heart twice a week; I got the book and found it follows the plan John uses with me. I'm a busy person and not a fitness fanatic, but using these simple techniques works. I'm more fit, healthy, confident, and serene than I've been in my whole life (I'm 54). Thanks John for showing integrity, passion and patience in the training, your books, and in all that you do!

After reading 'Body by Science' and Mentzer's books I have good knowledge of what makes HIT work

My first Amazon review. This books fills the void his previous one left. I am a fan of HIT style training. After reading 'Body by Science' and Mentzer's books I have good knowledge of what makes HIT work. This book however gives you the routines you can follow in 3 stages (foundation, 2 way split and 3 way split). In addition it builds on HIT theory from John's experiences. I think he is legit (drug free), after watching his Youtube interviews. I would love to train with him. This book is well written, direct and substantial. The only section I didn't care so much is the introduction where he inserts his Jesus blurb. I am not into that and I have a very happy and fulfilling life, so I skipped over it. It is great to have John Heart among us; He shows us what is possible in natural bodybuilding. Just about every fitness guru or bodybuilder with impressive physique is on drugs. It restores my faith in HIT. If you are smart and crossed 40, make sure you train with injury prevention in mind. Even a single set is a negative when it comes to joint health. Find the most efficient way to train, and do movements slowly and with control. In addition avoid certain movements that have high incidence of injury.

About the Author
     Joe Samuel "Sam" Starnes was born in Alabama, grew up in Cedartown, Georgia, and has lived in either New Jersey or Philadelphia since 2000. Red Dirt: A Tennis Novel, published by Breakaway Books, is his third novel. His first novel, Calling, was published in 2005, and was reissued in 2014 as an e-book by Mysterious Press.com/Open Road. NewSouth Books published his novel Fall Line in November 2011, and it was selected to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's "Best of the South" list. Starnes has had journalism appear in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and various magazines, as well as essays, short stories, and poems in literary journals. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia, an MA in English from Rutgers University in Newark, and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College. He was awarded a fellowship to the 2006 Sewanee Writers' Conference. He works in the administration at Widener University and has taught writing courses at Widener, Rowan University, and Saint Joseph's University.           As for his tennis game, he peaked in the early '80s when he was in his teens playing junior tournaments in Georgia, usually ranking in the top twenty or thirty players in the state. He spent a few weeks training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy over the holidays in 1981-82, but showed absolutely no promise of ever making it on the pro tour and was usually assigned to a distant court. He did win the Georgia Region 7-AAA high school championship in 1985. He now plays once or twice a week and holds a USTA rating of 4.5. In 2010, he played a 15-year-old girl ranked 920 in the world, winning six games and writing about it for Peter Bodo's blog. He also wrote about a search for Bill Tilden's grave for the August 2008 issue of Tennis magazine.

Like Jaxie Skinner and tennis

Again, I feel obliged to mention at the outset that I am acquainted with the author. That said, the tale of Jaxie Skinner and his surprising run as an 18-year-old at the French Open, his precipitous drop thereafter, and his ultimate redemption is delightful for tennis lovers and sports fans. The detailed commentary on various matches, the shot selection and direction by the players, is, for those of us who play tennis regularly, riveting. Sam Starnes obviously knows tennis inside and out, and also knows how to spin a tale that keeps the reader turning the pages, wanting to know what happens next. Like Jaxie Skinner and tennis, Sam Starnes has a real talent for writing fiction. For readers with a bent for literary fiction, I strongly recommend his "Fall Line".

Starnes at the top of his game!

I lost quite a bit of sleep over Red Dirt because I couldn’t put it down and because, quite frankly, I worried about the main character, Jaxie Skinner, the blue collar tennis prodigy. I watched his struggle for identity, his trouble with family, struggles and stop and start in his rise in his profession. I particularly liked watching Jaxie move through the tennis world, first as a boy whose father scraped a red dirt tennis court on their land, and faced it the wrong way, or east to west—so that the sun was in his eyes. Jaxie states, “The yellow balls came at me as though shot right out of the sun, as though the light of the universe had catapulted a ball my way.” Starnes has a wonderful eye for detail, and his descriptions are always spot-on. Jaxie’s father may have faced the court the wrong way, but he ultimately raised him the right way—he is a hard-working, driven man who, after considerable cracks in the court of life, is dedicated to his sport, but more importantly, dedicated to holding on to his humanity. I learned an awful lot about tennis and an awful lot about life in reading Red Dirt. It is the second Starnes novel that I have read, the first being Fall Line, which is an excellent novel. Red Dirt, however, is Starnes at the top of his game. Now I will catch up by reading his novel The Calling and then sit and wait for another. . .

It was like reading the journal of an amateur tennis player

just couldn't figure this one out, was it autobiographical or fiction? either way, very predictable and not very interesting. I did not even finish the book because it was heading for a predictable ending. Characters were not developed and no interesting twists to the plot. It was like reading the journal of an amateur tennis player.

About the Author
William Humphrey (1924–1997) was born in Clarksville, Texas. Neither of his parents went to school beyond the fifth grade, and during the height of the Great Depression his father hunted in the snake-infested swamplands of the Sulphur River to help feed the family. Humphrey left Clarksville at age thirteen and did not return for thirty-two years. By then he was the internationally acclaimed author of two extraordinary novels set in his hometown: Home from the Hill, a National Book Award finalist that became an MGM film starring Robert Mitchum, and its follow-up, The Ordways, which the New York Times called “exhilaratingly successful.” Eleven highly praised works of fiction and nonfiction followed, including Farther Off from Heaven, a memoir about Humphrey’s East Texas boyhood and his father’s tragic death in an automobile accident; The Spawning Run and My Moby Dick, two delightful accounts of the joys and travails of fly fishing; and No Resting Place, a novel about the forced removal of the Cherokee nation along the Trail of Tears.

A longtime professor of English and writing at Bard College and other schools, Humphrey was the recipient of awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Texas Institute of Arts and Letters.

An amazing book!!!

Have you ever read an action,adventure,and mystery all in one book? If you haven't the Seven Hidden Treasures is the book for you! This book is about a twelve year old and her brother looking for seven stolen treasures.Along the way there is a gray witch which will confuse you into following her. She can transform into a pretty woman and trick you.After my cousin gave it to me I didn't want to read it but turns out after I finished I wanted to read it again!I sadly rated a five star because that was the max but, In my mind I gave it a ten star out of five stars!I think 8 years to 18 years will enjoy it. Don't take my word for it...READ IT!!! -Mario, age 10

Amazing book for every age

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I think it's obvious that the cover might give the impression this book is probably for children and that wouldn't be completely false - this book can be read by anyone and they can enjoy it. (I sure did!)
The plot follows the story of two friends that slowly make their way through the magical word of books. There's a little magic in the mix and, you guessed it, dragons. And those dragons are probably my favourite characters. This is the first book of series, so the journey is nowhere near its end yet, but I'm hooked and would love to read the series.
The writing style is simple in a way - easy to digest so you can hungrily continue reading and having a blast with the characters. I felt connection with them, as they are so well developed, I could say they are like real - they have dept, they have thoughts and aren't perfect, which makes them even better. And I'm always in for a friendly adventure.
The story line moves from one small story to another, each of which stories has its own message that's presented very beautifully, which again makes the book enjoyable not only for kids but for adults as well - it doesn't come on a silver plate, yet it's short and clear. You have the feeling that the main characters are your friends and you're taking this journey with them. And we get sucked in a bookseption of books in the book in a small magical word.
And the dragons! They were just so cute and lovely. Can we get THE BOOK, too? I'd really like e dragon for a pet and friend.
In conclusion, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the book was amazing. I read it in two sittings and laughed almost all of the time. The story was very compelling and I'd love to soon read more and find out whatever else comes the way of Ayana and Tyler and the cutest dragons on the word. I'd recommend this book to anyone, who would like to give it a shot - it's, in one word, awesome.

Not just about dragons

In the back shelves of the local library, Ayana Fall and Tyler Travers find a book that not only lets them conjure a dragon, but allows them to become members of the Dragon of the Month Club. Now, on the 13th of every month, they receive instructions for conjuring a different type of dragon. The book warns of the dangers of not performing the spells correctly, but that doesn’t stop our heroes from trying out as many spells as they can.
Of course, one of the spells eventually backfires and the pair wind up in a strange, yet eerily familiar land with pop-up forests, oceans, deserts, waterfalls, and towering plateaus. And their only chance of returning home involves finding Professor Mobius, a genius who lives in a tower on the other side of the land. Together, Ayana and Tyler must stay calm and keep their wits about them as they journey through a land filled with many wonders and dangers.

Things I liked:
Despite the initial impression that this book was simply another story about dragons, it was more about Ayana and Tyler’s adventures as they trekked through the mysterious land in their quest to find a way home. Dragons did play a role helping out here and there, but mostly it was about the two heroes figuring their own way out of trouble.
Having Ayana and Tyler interact with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson was a refreshing twist I didn’t see coming. Sherlock Holmes, you ask? You’ll just have to read the book.

Things I didn’t like:
The writing style seemed to be aimed toward (early?) middle schoolers, although many of the references and terms which appear later in the book would probably require much older readers to appreciate, so I’m not sure if this story would be considered middle grade or not.
I was also quite disappointed with the end of the story—mostly because there wasn’t one. You’ll have to read the next book in the series (not yet published) to find out what happens. If this kind of thing bothers you, it might be better to wait until the next book is out before you buy this one. You’ve been warned!

Excellent for late elementary or early middle school English projects! Loved it!

Based on the title, The Dragon of the Month Club, my first impression was “this is going to be a silly kid’s book,” I am thrilled to say, I was wrong! I accepted this book, in exchange for an honest review; I decided it would be a book to share with my 10 year old daughter; being a mini nerd like me, she loves fantasy, and dragons! We have shared a nightly “story time” routine since she was 2; and yes, we still do this at age 10, only now, we share the reading. Thanks to Ian’s exceptional writing, my daughter wants to start reading earlier now; this doesn’t mean an earlier bedtime, but a longer reading session. She could not wait to get back into Ayana and Tyler’s adventure!

The characters were well developed, and imagery was superb. The Dragon of the Month Club brought several classic children’s novels and today’s popular movies together, creating a perfect marriage. All the elements of a great children’s book were multiplied times 10 in this book; there were many different adventures in one book, I feel like I read several books at once! I highly recommend this book to all readers, both young and older.

From a teacher’s point of view, I can easily see The Dragon of the Month Club as an excellent late elementary or early middle school English project. I plan to create an entire Units worth of lessons from this book; there’s fantasy/reality, compare/contrast, and several analytical aspects to be studied with this book. To be more specific, from an English teacher’s point of view, there are so many vocabulary building benefits of this book as well. My daughter is reading at a 6th grade level and she really enjoyed this book, she found it easy to read and enjoyed the occasional challenge in reading. The “higher level” words were place perfectly within the story, allowing the young reader to maintain confidence, while learning new vocabulary through content clues.

As a bonus to this review, I asked my daughter what she thought of this book. From a 10 year old girl’s point of view, The Dragon of the Month Club “was very exciting and I really liked Ayana. I really liked the adventures and want to read more books like this one!” She did say she wishes there were a few pictures in the book, and wants me to get a “real” (hard copy) book so she can read it again.

As a teacher and mother, I feel 5+ Boundless stars to be a fair rating; and my 10 year old completely agrees!....Beth
