Review
"Put it this way, if using the wealth of experience and information in this book net you over 25 hp over and above what you would have been producing without using it, you should consider it the cheapest 25 hp you ever gained." (American Car Magazine 2015-06-21)

From the Back Cover
The Chevy big-block has been installed in millions of cars and trucks over the past 50 years, including Camaros, Chevelles, Corvettes, Impalas, and a multitude of trucks. And extracting maximum performance has been the goal of many engine builders.

In this follow-up to his previous Chevy performance book, master engine builder David Vizard takes big-block Chevy engine building to the next level. But he shows how to build these extreme high-performance engines without breaking the bank. The discussion goes well beyond the basic performance techniques and delves into exceptional detail on critical components of the engine. The Chevy big-block has been substantially undervalued, and the key to getting the best performance from this engine is to effectively deal with its design limitations.

Vizard explains how to minimize intake valve shrouding on the block and unlock at least 20 hp. He also reveals how to arrive at the correct valve overlap for maximum volumetric efficiency. Heads must properly flow an enormous amount of air so selecting the best heads for a setup are detailed. Vizard covers the nuances of piston crown shapes, rings, and connecting rods to ensure that the rotating assembly is strong and working optimally. Chapters also include lubrication, fuel injection, single carb and tunnel ram intakes, ignition, and exhaust. A special section presents a number of max-performance big-block sample builds.

About the Author
David Vizard is a revered engine builder and acknowledged Chevy big-block engine expert, which is why GM contracted him to develop several engine packages for the Chevy big-block crate program. He has authored more than 30 highly respected engine-building and automotive titles, penned about 4,000 magazine articles, and contributed scores of web articles to popular sites. Often referred to as "Vizard the Wizard," his work is often the subject of blogs and editorial pieces in popular automotive magazines. He currently owns and runs an engine research and development business in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Must Read
By M. A. Ramos
This is a well written and presented book on how to build a big block Chevy for maximum performance on a budget. If you have built engines before this is the perfect book for you and you are, in my opinion, the intended reader. In my younger years I have mainly focused on small blocks because of the ease of increasing performance at a low cost. This book shows me how I can do the same for a big block.

The book is easy to read and filled with pertinent photographs and performance data. Some of the information just reinforces what you know about an engine build while some of the advice is counter intuitive. Yet the procedures are supported not only by raw data but actual track performance. Great advice on planning out what you want and need before you start on anything; you would think this is common sense but I have seen many just start work on a block and try to work through problems as they appear.

Every aspect of the build is consider including even the lubrication and break in period. Advice on available parts and the cost-benefit of each part. Even where certain tools can be acquired for the serious engine builder. The book is worth the price just to have access to the authors extensive dyno research that is presented I tables where appropriate. This book has changed my mind about the Chevy big block and I am pleased to have read it.

Excellent book full of interesting ideas with dyno results to back it up.
By Heath bar
I will start off by saying that I ordered two big block books, this one was on backorder, and after reading the other one that arrived first I was dissapointed in the other book. I have only built 3 big blocks myself along with a few other engines, and I usually do my homework before I build them, and the first book I read I felt I didn't learn anything, I feel I could of written it.

Then there is this book, now that has arrived I am pleasantly surprised. It was packed full of new information that I would of never thought of. I wrote down many things to include in my next build that will improve performance in both hp and torque. He goes into great detail on free block mods,(some old, some new), piston mods, rings, bore finish, lifter sizes, new main seals, balancers, lubrication and windage, pushrods, springs, cam overlap (LCA), etc. David included a wealth of knowledge in this book from his decades of experience, and after reading it, I have decided to buy the first one as well. He not only explains his theories, he also backs them up with real world dyno results to show you what you might expect from the extra effort.

I will say this book assumes you have already build some big blocks and are simply looking to improve your performance/skills. If you have never built a big block, you may want to also purchase a book or assembly manual that shows you how to assemble it. However, if you have built some before and want more info, then you will really like this book.

If there was one thing I was a little dissapointed about, it would have to be the cam specs. He goes into great detail of how much LCA he believes you need and why, however, doesn't go into much detail about the other cam specs. He mainly recommends you pay $50 or simply buy a cam from his friends engine service using David's COS Spec cam software he wrote after years of engine testing and development. Granted I am sure this is an excellent service that took years of hard work to offer, and if you buy the cam from them the $50 fee is waived, but I was hoping to learn more from the book to help me select the cam myself like I usually do. On the other hand, after he spent all the time and money developing the software, I do believe that is what he uses himself to select a cam, and he is simply offering that service to the public, rather than offering the software to the public.

With that said, this book is still 5 stars because of all the info he does pack into it. This book is not just a rewrite of old tips and tricks, this book is worth the read and I feel even a pro engine builder would benefit from it. I have built several engines, seen a lot more engines inside and out, and have family that races for a living and yet I haven't seen many of the tricks and info he puts into this book.

Study this book!
By Gerald R. Ford Jr.
General:

This is a book for serious racing engine builders. The budget part is achieved by choosing the right parts the first time, and not duplicating your efforts. It needs to be studied very closely and carefully to create a blueprint of your engine before you even start buying parts. The author does detail several counter-intuitive moves that he has found to work. Through his extensive dyno research, he can extract the last 1/10th of 1 percent of the power potential of an engine combination. However, he balances this with the caution that bigger is not always better, and engine life is part of the budget mindset. If you don't blow it up, you don't have to rebuild it.

Is this book worth the $26.95? Even a hobby builder will save that amount by choosing the right cam, heads, valve train, intake, and exhaust the first time. Paying attention to detail, and knowing the right questions to ask parts suppliers is well worth the investment of your money, time, and knowledge gained.

Detail:

It is a very general overview of using mostly aftermarket parts that exceed General Motors specifications for their stock motors. It's also a book on normally aspirated engines. No Turbo, No Supercharger, No Nitrous. A testament to “attention to detail” that will make more than enough for the street. As a serious book, a first read through is needed to form a relationship between all the parts in an engine, and how they work with each other to make power. Serious thought, and study is needed to design an engine from this book.

As with any serious technical subject, references to different chapters of this book, and several other books by the author, and other sources are made, and needed, for a greater understanding of how to make maximum performance of a big block Chevy engine. That just reinforces the need to study this book before making a blueprint of the engine you want to make.

There are several surprising modifications in this book that make it worth reading. All his dyno time and research are quite astounding. Simple mods to the block to control oil and vacuum are well worth doing. Same with choosing Heads, Cam, and Intake Manifolds.

This book is quite heavy on carburetors, not so much on fuel injection. This is more to do with the competition/race attitude of the book, where atomization of the fuel needs the extra length of travel above 3,000 RPM. He does achieve driveability with carbs that are equal to fuel injection, through “attention to detail”.

Cam and Valvetrain chapters are very important, as this is the brains of the engine. He has developed the COS-Cam (computer optimised specification) system for having special grinds made to match each particular engine. As He says, getting a special ground cam is no more expensive than buying the wrong cam. Valvetrain components are discussed in relation to the cam/head ralationship in great detail. Well worth study.

The exhaust chapter was quite surprising, as he has discovered that unequal length runners make more power in headers. Also the introduction of evacupan fittings in the exhaust to make vacuum in the block for oil control. Just another “attention to detail” move that is worth doing.

I'm not tearing down my original '71 402, as it is 'original' only once! Building a replacement engine, while keeping (and mothballing) my original is the plan I choose. With that in mind, even his Chapter 13: Build #1, 468 with Edelbrock E-Steet Heads engine is a serious boost in torque and HP. Can my transmission, rear end, suspension, and tire/wheels handle this extra power? This last question is outside the scope of this engine book, but needs to be addressed as part of the overall design of a Hot Rod. ( )
