The first part of this book really talks about the authors progress from scoring from the 120 to the 70s. Found this book to be entertaining, and a good guide that will definitely improved my overall attitude towards the game. Would definetly recommend this book.

In this book we get the benefit of a collection of lessons that the author had to learn over extended periods of time to arrive at optimal performance. I am grateful that I found all these lessons in one place and have started making use of them in my own game. The illustrations make everything even easier to understand and with this being such a light book it was well worth my money considering that I have already started to see improvements.

Bicycling the Path Toward Fun and Fitness

Dale Talbert was sixty-seven and weighed in at over 200 pounds when he discovered the pleasures and benefits of bicycling. Depressed and at risk of having a heart attack or a stroke, he’d tried numerous other activities, including running and walking with his dogs. This proved to be great for the huskies’ shape, but he never shed much weight or improved his health. One day took notice of the bicyclists of various ages that rode past him everyday. None of them were overweight, and he wondered about the connection between the slim people he saw riding and the activity itself. He found a used bike, borrowed his son’s skateboarding helmet, and began pedaling to find out for himself. Little did he know he was setting out on a wonderful journey that would include more than weight loss and good health.

Bicycling for Fun and Fitness is Dale Talbert’s entertaining and instructional book about bicycling for beginners. In this book he assures us that it takes very little to begin bicycling. All that’s needed is a bit of interest and a bike—and not even a fancy one. He tells us about his first ride and gives us tips for our own, including information about clothes and equipment and how to choose what’s best for which occasion. Talbert also writes about his daily rides—the time of day, length, and speed that they are, plus the compromises he makes to get his ride in every day. Then he writes about our daily ride and all their possibilities, including weather conditions, and riding to work or during the lunch hour. Talbert also gives us tips on bicycling safety and on courtesy concerning fellow cyclists, pedestrians, cars, and even dogs. There’s a chapter about the history of women and bicycling and another about biking as a way to improve our awareness as automobile drivers. And! in a chapter called “Scoreboard” Talbert discusses in detail the many benefits and payoffs of bicycling. Throughout Bicycling for Fun and Fitness Talbert gives delightful and insightful thoughts on bicycling out in the world and the many rewards this activity has to offer. The road he’s pedaling, plus the stories he tells, are proof of how bicycling can add even more than good health and good shape to our lives.

About the Author
Dale Talbert is retired from a career as a citrus grower and a commodity broker. He is the author of Duke, a collection of stories about a Korean War veteran, based on his own experiences. He lives and writes in Vero Beach, Florida.

One of the Most Helpfull Self-Help Books Ever.

My sister read this wonderful book, bought a bicycle, and now she rides 60 to 70 miles a week. She sees the trees and flowers, hears the birds, and for the first time in her life, she knows how much wind there is and from what direction it's coming from. Me too. Bicycling is a marvelous physical exercise, but, as the author says, it's also a mind cleanser. Let's ride!

I thought this was a well written an informative book. The gentleman that poorly reviewed the book above admits to not knowing anything about writing and should admit to not knowing anything about reading as well. As a published author I can say I know how difficult it is to get something published, and If Mr. Talbert got a publisher to publish this book then he certainaly has got something right there. I thought the book read well and made me want to go right out and ride my bike. It is a must read for anyone who wants to loose weight and have fun doing so.

Regulations are all well and good (once we have some), but what’s really needed is a user’s guide to flying and operating safely.

The recently published (Feb. 14) “Read Before Flight: A Guide to Standardize Unmanned Aircraft System Training and Flight Operations” by Nicholas Damron is a timely answer to the call for a safer approach to drone operations. An essential read for any individual or company looking to integrate the use of UAVs in their operations, this book will easily become the authority and go-to reference for flight training as UAVs become more ubiquitous.

An Army qualified Instructor Operator of Unmanned Aircraft Systems with over eight years of flight training and operational experience, Damron’s military background clearly shows through in the methodical and precise approach to implementing standardized procedures for flight training and operation of UAVs. That’s not to say that “Read Before Flight” is aimed at a military audience – quite the contrary. The concise 60-page book is easily comprehensible to a civilian readership.

Extremely well organized, “Read Before Flight” could act as an off-the-shelf course for a UAV training program. Must read for anyone interested in creating a drone training program

Nicholas does a great job taking his years of Army UAS operating and instructing experience and puts it in an easy to read book. Anyone interested in creating a drone training program should read this book before flight- just like the title says. Also, this book is great for getting ideas for already in place training programs.

Must read for business that wants to commercialize UAS usage

The author makes good points about standardizing training. As UAS use increases, especially commercially, a standard way of measuring pilots will become increasingly important. What is now primarily a hobby will become something much more, much like when the airplane was first flown, and quickly became an industry. With industrialization comes training and standardization, until it becomes easy to measure (and increase) skill level. It's true for any industry. The author gives good guidelines and structure in the book and it's obvious from the content that he has the background to be writing such a book.

I'm a little disappointed in the Kindle version, however, because I feel like there are more figures and examples included in the physical book that didn't make their way into the Kindle version.

Still, though, I would recommend to anyone seriously interested in building a service business around UAS.

Good Read, but Not Fulfilling

If not for the subtitle, I would likely have never read this book. On the other hand, if I had read it, I would have likely given it 5 stars. Confused? So am I.

The subtitle reads "A Year of Wandering, from California to England and Tuscany and Back Again." Although not noted in the subtitle, the author's year also included a journey to Oregon. I was raised in California, lived for many years in Washington and Oregon, have now returned to California close to where the author trod, and have enjoyed stays in both England and Tuscany. The subtitle spoke to me. I wanted to know what the author had learned while experiencing many of the places that I knew.

Instead, what I read was a series of snapshots. Lovely pictures of the places he had visited, pictures that reminded me of the reasons I loved the same places. I particularly recommend the chapters on the London pub and the Florence racetrack. But there was no sense of discovery, no sense of lessons learned in the author's wandering.

Perhaps the error was mine. Perhaps I read something into the subtitle that neither the author nor publisher meant. But I can't give 5 stars to a book that failed to meet my primary expectation for it.

About the Author

James Stevens Curl is a leading architectural historian. His many books include Funerary Monuments & Memorials in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh (2013); Freemasonry & the Enlightenment: Architecture, Symbols, & Influences (2011-an earlier version of which won (1992) the Sir Banister Fletcher Award as Best Book of the Year); Spas, Wells, & Pleasure-Gardens of London (2010); Victorian Architecture: Diversity & Invention (2007); and The Honourable The Irish Society and the Plantation of Ulster, 1608-2000 (2000). He contributed to, and edited, the scholarly monograph Kensal Green Cemetery: The Origins and Development of the General Cemetery of All Souls, Kensal Green, London, 1824-2001 (2001), the first major study of any nineteenth-century cemetery in the world. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, was twice Visiting Fellow at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge, and is currently Professor of Architecture at the University of Ulster.

Susan Wilson is an historian with an especial interest in garden architecture, landscape aesthetics, and places of commemoration. Her doctorate was conferred (2010) by the University of Bristol for her study of the 'Swiss Garden Cottage: the origins of the chalet-style in British architecture'. She published her early findings in Exercises in Translation: Swiss-British Cultural Exchange (2006). In 2013 she chaired an interdisciplinary conference-session on the Rustic Tradition in Garden Art in New York. She taught the history of the applied and decorative arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design (2000-6), and gained recognition for her teaching practice as a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (2007). She has collaborated with Professor Stevens Curl on this edition of the Dictionary since 2012. Awarded (2012) the Opler Grant for Emerging Scholars by the Society of Architectural Historians (USA), she is also an Academic Member of the Landscape Institute.

The Definitive Source

A dictionary with personality is a rare thing today, when bland collaborative work is usually the only way to deal with the deluge of information. With this third edition, Professor Curl keeps his one-man show on the road in triumphal style. The major additions since the second edition of 2006 are nearly 500 articles on landscape architecture by Dr. Susan Wilson (now acknowledged as co-author) and the restoration of the Bibliography from the first edition, expanded to over 3000 entries. The result is a book at the comfortable limit of the readable (as opposed to the merely consultable), with Curl’s familiar clarity of description, exquisite line and stipple drawings, and defense of architecture as a sacred trust for the humans who are obliged to inhabit it.
Like any good Dictionary, this one draws the reader into random and potentially endless wandering. For instance, I was intrigued by mention on the front flap of a ‘battle garden’, and discovered that one Irish example was made as “a talisman to keep the Turks at bay: it succeeded.” A reference there to ‘horn-work’ educated me on the difference between cat’s ear, lion’s ear, dog’s ear, and ass’s ear horns. A glimpse of nearby Victor Horta had me flipping back to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with a radiant drawing of the Hoover Factory entrance; to Artisan Mannerism (“which some commentators have found refreshing and others distressing”) and so on to Mannerism, by way of a long detour on Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Professor Curl’s once unfashionable, anti-Modernist stance is now almost mainstream, as many would agree with his devastating understatement on Walter Gropius: “the environments created as a result of his influence have not proved to be either agreeable or functional.” While this edition excludes entries on living architects, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind and their kind get their come-uppance under ‘Deconstructivism or Deconstructionism’. However, such judgments are embedded in information as copious and impartial as one could wish. There are also new friends, for instance in the much-expanded article on ‘New Classicism’. My only regret is that there are no entries on buildings (except the Pantheon). Should I want to know who were the architects of the Empire State Building or Schloss Neuschwanstein, I would have to look on the Internet, which threatens to make all paper reference works redundant. This Dictionary more than justifies its medium, for beside the obvious advantage that one can trust all its facts, dates, and sources, it has the feeling of a real communication from mind to mind.

A Salty And Remarkable Tale

I found this book an entertaining and well-told yarn about a type of fishing that is rarely written about. The quest for orange roughy has a touch of the gold-rush days about it, and the characters involved are colourful to say the least. Peach has the common touch and his droll observations about life at sea and the fishermen he worked with lift this tale beyond a mere re-telling of one of the fishing industry's most remarkable periods. In short, it's a crackingly good read, especially for anyone interested in how that fish got onto your plate.

I'm so glad I bought this book. What a great yarn. Especially enjoyed the bit about working on the Russian trawler. This has been written by someone who obviously knows his stuff, and the story is told with great tongue-in-cheek humor. A most enjoyable, funny and educational read. Recommended.

The author also shares dozens of original high quality player photos with the reader. She also shares a sometimes quirky sense of humor as she strives to deliver the information in a somewhat entertaining fashion.

The Quintessential Book for any Astros Fan

I've been following Jayne's blog for years and I have enjoyed every minute. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the Houston Astros minor league teams is simply unrivaled. Her passion for each of the players flows freely in this quintessential book for any Astros fan. So much information has been compiled about the Astros minor league teams in this book...ballpark information, size of the fields, coaching staff, player information, player reports, even twitter handles...do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Over the years, I have gone from a casual fan of the Houston Astros to an absolute expert on all MiLB teams and players. With Jayne's blog, not only do I follow the Astros season, but I also have over 8 other minor league teams to root for throughout the baseball season. What a gift!

A must-have resource for any true diehard Astros fan

So excited about this book. The BA Prospect Handbook is great, but it only covers about 30 prospects (and these are all guys any semi-serious fan already knows about). But stats, info, and insight about 257 Astros prospects?! Wow. I think this book is a must have for any true diehard Astros fan. I've just started to dig into this, but already impressed by the stats and insight this book provides. Oh, and did I mention it has photos, videos, and links to even MORE info? For the price of a hot dog and coke at a ball game (maybe less) you can have this awesome resource at your fingertips.

There is no better source for the Houston Astros Farm System. This is extremely thorough, yet still entertaining. Well done, Jayne Hansen! I hope this is the first of many books from you!

Excellent book with useful tips and easy-to-follow instructions on paddle fishing.

Paddles & Fresh Fins is an excellent book on paddle fishing. The book not only instructs the reader in the methods of paddle fishing but provides some short stories that are warm, and sometimes humorous based on the author's experience. I found these stories to be very enjoyable. The how-to chapters offer useful tips and easy-to-follow instructions with good illustrations on the different paddle strokes, bait considerations, safety, and rigging the boat. I found the book to be written in a way that was easy to understand and the information presented was very helpful and unique to paddle fishing. I learned a great deal from reading "Paddles & Fins", and I do recommend it.

Excellent read regarding paddle fishing

This book by Michael Agner offers a wealth of information on paddle fishing. As a relatively new kayak fisherman, I found the book offers an excellent overview of the important aspects of selecting the right equipment as well as providing useful rigging information and safety tips. I consider the book an excellent read and very entertaining with some of Mr. Agner's personal fishing experiences.

Paddles and Fresh Fins is a great read. It combines the technical side of Paddle Fishing with a warm and human aspect of growing up in the South in the 60s. Fishermen, outdoorsmen and geeks will enjoy Mr. Agner’s love for his family, the South and fishing. It is very entertaining and I highly recommend it.”
