GO NOW! Guide

I bought my copy of Pacific Crossing Notes on Amazon, but I am writing a review at the request, on page 373, of the author. The book is great - and I think essential - for those who are really going to go. There is a lot of priceless information about radio nets, websites, how to get - and use - weather information, passage planning, whether to dare to go to Fatu Hiva without formally checking in at the Marquesas first (page 180), etc., etc. I have never read anything like it, except occasional articles in the Seven Seas Cruising Association Bulletin. I love that the authors' 35 year old boat had neither air conditioning, a water maker, or a flat screen TV. The book is focused on boats "the rest of us" own and cruise.

I think the book is not, nor was it written to be, great literature, and those who are looking for great sailing literature should try the Hiscocks, for starters. But the book is 5 stars for what it is intended to be - a practical GO NOW! guide.

Wonderfully Written and Practical Resource for Sailing/Cruising Enthusiasts!

A wonderfully written and practical resource for sailing and cruising enthusiasts- including armchair cruisers! I would heartily recommend this book by Nadine Slavinski and Markus Schweitzer for anyone planning to cruise, or dreaming of adventure travel by sailboat or with plans to sail in the South Pacific.

The chapters are very well organized; as well as chocked full of helpful and interesting tips on the sailing lifestyle, family cruising, and sailing the Islands of the Coconut Milk Run. Helpful resources such as books and websites were also included at the end of each chapter. The author's writing style is excellent and this book is well written.

As someone about to buy a bluewater cruising sailboat and head off cruising, I especially enjoyed the chapters on Preparation, Getting the Most Out of a Survey, From Weekend Warrior to Ocean Voyager, Safety, Cockpit Safety, Weather Notes, and more! Detailed information was also provided for each place they have traveled; very practical and useful information for those heading that way.

Reading the description of how helpful the authors found their new Parasailor, and whether it was worth the investment, was another favorite section of the book, as was reading their time spent in Maupiti, in French Polynesia and Vanautu. All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; it is a must have for new Pacific cruisers! Please note that I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thus said, I loved this book, and I know I will often refer to sections as I prepare for my own adventure.

A Wealth of Information

The South Pacific holds a wealth of adventure for those willing to take to the wind and sail across it. The authors of this book did just that and they did it well. And they did it with their young son on board. I was very interested to read the authors' perspective of this journey as I am currently in New Zealand after having followed a similar route. There is so much to share and I was interested in seeing how they was able to boil it down to one book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you are interested in sailing across the South Pacific this book gives you a good idea of the adventures that await. Of course to someone who has been there it seems light at times but I understand and appreciate the difficulty in sharing all of it. The authors do a great job of referring you to other sources of information on many subjects, especially weather routing...everyone's biggest fear.

Lots to read and enjoy.

One of those books you'll keep coming back to...

I'm not sure how many light bulbs went off for me, reading this book... there were quite a few. Aside from the very practical exercises, in word and picture, it is utterly reassuring to read that one is not alone in being fearful after a bad fall, a round pen session gone wrong, or the likes. Anne Gage does a fabulous job of making you assess yourself and your horse, step by step.

This is one of those books that'll be around for years to come... dog eared, battered and beat up, because it is worth re-reading many times over.

Essential Reading for Horse People

'Confident Rider Confident Horse' has become the foundation for everything I do with my horses, on the ground and under saddle.

As a mature rider, returning to riding after many years off I found my confidence shaky and could not afford to take any risks in my riding. The first section in the book addresses the mental and physical aspects of fear and made me feel at ease with what I was going through. It also helps you lay out a plan to work through horse related stress, anxiety and fear.

Anne gives a thorough overview of horse behaviour, psychology and body language with lots of pictures and uses it to show how to 'read' a horse as well as how to communicate effectively with your horse in their own language. The book emphasizes the necessity of creating a relationship of mutual trust and respect with your horse and does a good job of showing you how.

I learned a lot that I did not know and I also learned that so much that I had been taught previously was incorrect, things like the basics of steering, posting, transitions. Concepts are explained in easy to understand terms with illustrations to help.

This book has helped me to become a more critical, thinking rider and horse person. I don't take horses for granted anymore and I have become much more serious about my riding and methodology.

I keep this book right beside my Sally Swift and my Chris Irwin.

This is one of the best horse books that I have ever read

This is one of the best horse books that I have ever read. Even if you do not have a fear issue, this book is well worth the read. This book does an outstanding job in covering equine language, riding in alignment, and footfalls. Equine language is covered more thorough in this book than in any other book that I've read. And there are lots of pictures to show what the author describes. After reading this book, I really could gage my horse's attitude by signs that I never noticed until I read this book. In addition, the author's explanation of riding in alignment and foot falls is explained in great detail and in a way that you can easily understand what it is, why it is important to both the rider and horse, and how to execute when riding. I learned a tremendous amount about reading body language of horses and riding from this book. This author writers in a way that is very easy to understand while at the same time providing a great deal of information that is useful and that you don't read about in other books. If you want to be able to read horses by their body language and want to be a better rider, then this is the book for you. This book is for all disciplines.

Modern history of "the granddaddy of American open-water swims"

In Swimming the Light 1976-2014, Bob McCormack details the last four decades of the Boston Light Swim. This is his second book on the history of the Boston Light Swim, an 8-mile, cold open-water swim. The book is formated in a annual chronology. If you swam the Boston Light Swim in the recent years since 1976 then your name can be found in the pages of this book. It is a quick read. Anyone who is interested in the history of open-water swimming or is thinking about entering the Boston Light Swim should read this book. Best Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide Ever!

This is only the second book I have ever reviewed on Amazon, and I am writing this review to let everyone know what an awesome book this is. I have read every guidebook on Yellowstone that I could find. This e-book is the best guide to fishing in Yellowstone country that is out there and at a fraction of the cost of the others. I just read it all in one sitting on a Saturday afternoon. There is tons of practical information in this book without a lot of BS. The author tells you what you need to know, including very detailed information on hatches, flies, and fishing certain sections of the rivers during different parts of the year. He also tells you which parts of which rivers aren't worth your time. He is a working guide who is out on the rivers all the time and definitely knows what he is talking about.

The book is very well written, and the author's clear and succinct writing style made me order his book of fishing stories, River Characters, which is available as a paperback in addition to an e-book. The only complaint that I have about this e-book is that it is not also available in paperback. I don't know why, but some publisher could make a lot of money by coming out with a paperback version. I am looking forward to the author's next book which is due out later this year.

If you are thinking about traveling to Yellowstone country to fish, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It will be the best $2.99 you ever spend.

A great guide for the first timer or the experienced Montana angler. Much more than just a guide for Yellowstone Park (which would be worth the price on its own) everything is covered from tackle, flies, hatches,clothing to a comprehensive guide to all sections of the rivers covered. Extensive coverage of the Madison in and out the Park and coverage of areas of the Missouri I haven't typically seen. Whatever you need to know, you can probably find it here. A bargain for Yellowstone Park anglers or those who are interested in fishing outside of the Park. Knowledge catches more trout than $800 fly rods (though there nice to have if you can afford them) this guide will help you catch fish.

Handy Guide - Well done

A handy guide to the hikes in the Pisgah region. The book has the look, feel, and narrative of a helpful soul you might meet along a hike who is just chock full of information and seems to know where to go and what to do when you get there. We're looking forward to exploring the region further based upon the information contained in the text.

Perhaps most helpful is that the book appears to present "realistic" day hikes that are correctly referenced by their skill level. The times expressed for the hikes are spot on based upon our previous efforts with some of the hikes mentioned. Well organized and with a helpful sense, this is an excellent guidebook for those interested in hiking the region.

He reveals how the influence of the scientist and strategist has extended well beyond the laboratory and the classroom—in the proposal of Kennedy's advisers for a nuclear "demonstration" and even a "clever first-strike" against the Russians, for example. Counsels of War also shatters certain popular assumptions about U.S. nuclear policy. As Herken points out, while American doctrine stresses "retaliation," U.S. strategists have always planned to "pre-empt" a Soviet attack.

Herken shows that the lines in the current nuclear debate were actually drawn at the dawn of the atomic age, and that the experts' technically abstruse arguments have only served to hide from the public the fundamental, deeply held—and quite subjective—differences at the heart of the debate. Since Hiroshima, there has been a growing awareness of the peril created by nuclear weapons, yet the crucial questions that were never adequately addressed in 1945 unanswered today. Given the inability of the experts to confront the essential dilemma of the nuclear age, Counsels of War calls for a new nuclear debate, one focused on American rather than Soviet intentions and that seeks an answer to the fundamental, yet still unresolved question: What are these weapons for?

An Important Topic

Nuclear war represents the penultimate concern facing humanity, with the final question being “why?”. It is against this backdrop that Gregg Herken examines the route to the policy that has guided the American nuclear enterprise since the beginning of the world’s first nuclear war at Hiroshima.

Taking the high road, Herken’s focus is upon the policy-makers that have driven post-war American efforts toward nuclear effectiveness. Indeed, by looking at those decision-makers that have most shaped the nature of the American nuclear policy, Herken shows us that, great or not, it has been a select coterie of people that will usually have the greatest impact on the lives of many. To be certain, the multiplying effects of nuclear weapons and their potential use have shaped the 20th and now 21st centuries—all the result of a relative few scientists, military leaders and policy-makers.

Herken’s efficacy is unquestionable. Having reviewed a seemingly endless ream of declassified documents and interviewed some of the key players in the impending deadly drama, Herken adds a certain level of candor to a discussion within the nuclear policy class that has too long occurred in secret. While this does not resolve the concern of secrecy that shrouds this important discourse, it at least opens the record for examination.

Ultimately, Herken shows us that there have been decisions made on the behalf of all that have occurred in an insular and hidebound environment. In so doing, he reminds us that decisions matter; as a result, Herken has given us the tools to start asking questions about those decisions and, ultimately, to build a better world.

To the Editors:

Lord Zuckerman compressed a vast amount of nuclear wisdom into his recent NYR articles, showing once again the value of listening to those who, like Lord Zuckerman, Robert McNamara, George Ball, and McGeorge Bundy, forged their nuclear convictions in positions of great responsibility, near the center of power, at times of great stress.

The July piece, on Herken's "Counsels of War" [NYR, July 18], is, in addition, entertaining. The demolishing of Dr. Herken, for anyone with a particle of sadism in his nature, can only be described as fun. My suggestion to Dr. Herken is that he lie there quietly in the center of the ring while the referee counts to ten.

My only substantial problem with Lord Zuckerman's articles is his blanket insistence on the need to prevent all East-West hostilities, conventional and nuclear, rather than focusing specifically on nuclear war. In this, he makes the best the enemy of the good, or, more exactly, he makes the ideal the enemy of the absolutely essential.

In brief, extended deterrence has these dangerous defects:

- By threatening to introduce nuclears into conventional operations, it makes nuclear firing legitimate, a usable, normal-if ultimate - weapon. This irresistibly nuclearizes the strategy, doctrine and weapons of both sides. It demands hair-trigger alertness. It makes it overwhelmingly probable that any E-W hostilities would become nuclear.

- It produces "limited," "war-fighting" plans and training which are militarily useless, and almost inevitably escalatory. Nuclear war once started is probably uncontrollable.

- By threatening to raise the stakes to the nuclear level, and thus threatening the destruction of the opponent's nation, culture, and population, at our own initiative, it creates and perpetuates mortal hostility.

Sooner or later, in one crisis or another, through some misjudgment or misunderstanding or stupidity, or some unlimited dedication to some principle or purpose, absolute peace will fail. On that day, we must not be relying on nuclearized forces, armed and indoctrinated to use nuclear weapons when conventional elements get into trouble, at the highest pitch of nuclear readiness, pressing against their nuclear controls, and with no stopping point once nuclear war starts.

In brief, extended nuclear deterrence uses the nuclear threat to reduce the threat of conventional war only by accepting substantially increased risk of nuclear war. It counts on the nuclear weapon, the suicide threat, to deter all E-W hostilities at any significant level, and to deter them forever. And it promises only unimaginable disaster if that threat fails.

Preventing the appalling catastrophe of nuclear war must be our central objective. Nuclear retaliation, and only retaliation, against nuclear, and only nuclear, attack is the only role for nuclear forces. Conventional deterrence and conventional defense must be done with conventional forces. In Lord Zuckerman's words, "The word 'war' cannot and should not be used in association with the term 'nuclear.' " They are different phenomena.

The optokinetic eye movement is a combination of saccadic and slow eye movements that keeps a full-field image stable on the retina during sustained head rotation. Each of these movements is a conjugate eye movement, that is, movements of both eyes together driven by a common neural source. A vergence movement is a non-conjugate eye movement allowing the eyes to track targets as they come closer or farther away. In Part 1, early models of saccades and smooth pursuit are presented. A number of oculomotor plant models are described therein beginning with the Westheimer model published in 1954, and up through our 1995 model involving a 4th-order oculomotor plant model. In Part 2, a 2009 version of a state-of-the-art model is presented for horizontal saccades that is 3rd-order and linear, and controlled by a physiologically based time-optimal neural network. In this book, a multiscale model of the saccade system is presented, focusing on the neural network. Chapter 1 summarizes a whole muscle model of the oculomotor plant based on the 2009 3rd-order and linear, and controlled by a physiologically based time-optimal neural network. Chapter 2 presents a neural network model of biophysical neurons in the midbrain for controlling oculomotor muscles during horizontal human saccades. To investigate horizontal saccade dynamics, a neural circuitry, including omnipause neuron, premotor excitatory and inhibitory burst neurons, long lead burst neuron, tonic neuron, interneuron, abducens nucleus, and oculomotor nucleus, is developed. A generic neuron model serves as the basis to match the characteristics of each type of neuron in the neural network. About the Author
Alireza Ghahari received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Iran, in August 2007. Thereafter, he completed his M.Sc. in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Tehran, Iran, in March 2010. During those years of study, he gained valuable insights into systems engineering by taking courses in a variety of contexts, such as statistical signal processing, information theory and coding, computer vision, and pattern recognition. He started his Ph.D. in the ECE department at University of Connecticut in Fall 2010. His dissertation major advisor was Prof. John Enderle. He has come to realize the profound contributions of Prof. Enderle in the field of theoretical and computational neuroscience,and truly considers John to be a major influence, both academically and personally. His research areas of interest include spiking neural networks analysis and implementation, brain-computer interface, and development of computational techniques. John D. Enderle, Biomedical Engineering Program Director and Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut, received the B.S., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering, and M.E. degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1975, 1977, 1980, and 1978, respectively. After completing his Ph.D. studies, he was a senior staff member at PAR Technology Corporation, Rome, New York, from 1979 to 1981. From 1981-1994, Enderle was a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Coordinator for Biomedical Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo, North Dakota. Dr. Enderle joined the National Science Foundation as Program Director for Biomedical Engineering & Research Aiding Persons with Disabilities Program from January 1994-June 1995. In January 1995, he joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut (UConn) as Professor and Head of the Electrical & Systems Engineering Department. In June 1997, he became the Director for the Biomedical Engineering Program at UConn. Dr. Enderle is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the current Editor-in-Chief of the EMB Magazine, the 2004 EMBS Service Award Recipient, Past-President of the IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), EMBS Conference Chair for the 22nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE EMBS and World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in 2000, a past EMBS Vice-President for Publications & Technical Activities and Vice-President for Member and Student Activities, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), an ABET Program Evaluator for Bioengineering Programs, a member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission, a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and Biomedical Engineering Division Chair for 2005, and a Senior member of the Biomedical Engineering Society. Enderle was elected as a Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering in 2003, with membership limited to 200 persons. He is also a Teaching Fellow at the University of Connecticut since 1998.
