I downloaded this book because I'm interested in learning more about the physiology of training. While it is informative, and I did learn a few things, all in all it's really geared more towards men than women. Which is fine, just not what I was looking for. So Men, by all means read this. Women, not so much.

With Two Oars

Sculling coach William Irvine's book, With Two Oars Reflections on Sculling does an excellent job of identifying, analyzing the causes, and providing instruction and drills for correcting the common faults of aspiring scullers. I love his term flipaphobia (the fear of flipping the shell) which is responsible for many faults. The book stresses the importance of properly setting the boat. Overall it provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of proper sculling technique and how to achieve it.

Excellent book, which will make you think about your sculling technique

This book really made me think about my sculling. So many books are of the "quick catch, flat drive, controlled recovery" ilk, but this book provided more insight into how the boat responds to my actions, and what I need to do to correct my style and become one with the boat.

Some of the text is addressed at novice scullers, but if you skim over that, there are some real insights for experienced scullers.

I initially bought the book as a Kindle edition, but it's so good I bought a hard copy as well.

An accessible, thoughtful and reflective look at the rowing stroke.

This is a gentle dissection of what one man knows about the rowing stroke. Event though this is aimed at the intermediate/experienced crowd I read it before I'd been in a shell. From this perspective I'd recommend it as there is much that will take you by complete surprise about sculling if you just show up and start learning about it the same day you first get in a boat. Now I'm a novice; I've been out rowing some and I'm learning the stroke. This book now becomes invaluable in knowing what one experienced thoughtful person's perspective is on what the stroke should be, in having many clever ways of diagnosing what is going wrong with your stroke,and in having drills you can use to help address those issues. I also found this book to be an accessible and enjoyable read. Rowing is not an easy sport and being a novice is really hard. I'm quite pleased to have this book to read and reread as progress on this journey.

About the Author
Bill Deane was the Senior Research Associate at the National Baseball Hall of Fame from 1986 to 1994 and was managing editor of Total Baseball. He has authored eight books, including Baseball Myths: Debating, Debunking, and Disproving Tales from the Diamond (2012), and has written more than 200 book-chapters and articles about baseball. In 1989, Deane won the SABR-Macmillan Baseball Research Award for his SABR book, Award Voting.

Author Bill Deane tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the hidden ball trick in this thoroughly researched book.

The hidden ball trick (HBT) is almost as old as baseball itself. The first recorded incident was on May 20, 1872. Deane has documented 264 cases of HBT. As Deane shows, the HBT can be pulled almost any time, and it isn't just rookies who are the victims. Veterans and future Hall of Famers have found themselves on the wrong end of the embarrassing HBT.

Some players consider the HBT as "bush league," and from time to time, there has been talk of banning the play.

Connie Ryan, who played in the majors from 1942 to 1954, said the HBT is a "perfectly legitimate maneuver. A runner and his coach have an obligation to be on their toes to prevent it from happening."

Details of the individual HBT range from just a couple sentences to 200-300 words. To Deane's credit, he offers multiple newspaper accounts of the play, if they're available. He even corresponded decades later with some of the players involved to get their version.

Deane enhances the book with chapters "Tricks Gone Awry," "Unsubstantiated Possibilities," "Odds and Ends," footnotes, a bibliography, an appendix listing all 264 HBTs and an index.

Deane offers a variety of interesting tidbits, such as the HBT was successful three times on May 26, 1914, throughout the book.

Although this isn't a book for the casual baseball fan, those with an interest in research and baseball history will find it well worth their time. Few subjects in baseball have been as thoroughly covered and documented by a single author.

If, like me, you need to go on another adventure with Virginia, get this book! The writing is just as engaging, funny and riveting. It is interesting to contrast the young Virginia who is facing her first real confrontation with the need and expression for independence with the wiser, more seasoned Virginia of the second book. The same astonishing honesty and wonder led me page by page on a journey I will never take myself. I am so grateful that Virginia can write so vividly that I can have the experience of biking across America. I think this story should be made into a movie. If you know a film maker, send them this book.

A great sailor's odyssey

Full disclosure here… I’m Dave Bricker’s Dad, and I’m recommending that you read “The Blue Monk.” I, of course, got to watch Dave grow up, proceeding early towards goals his mom and I couldn’t understand. Never a top student, he majored in Jazz in college, and became a first-rate guitarist. While his mom and I despaired of his career choices, such as they were, he gravitated to a community of what we saw as a motley collection of misfits in Miami’s Coconut Grove anchorage, where, inexplicably, he found himself at home. I derisively called him a “street person of the sea,” as, to my eye, despite his expertise with computers, he floundered uselessly around, having somehow learned to survive on 30 cents a month out there on the water. I know better now.

The Blue Monk tells the story, which I read with page-turning fascination. It turns out that this kid of mine, now nearly 50, has meticulously and gorgeously recorded a marvelous odyssey of the sea. As you read, you’ll alternately be drenched by spray, swept into realms of great joy and calm, occasionally run aground in strange places, sometimes made queasy by motions of the craft on choppy and uncertain seas, and will experience, through his powerful descriptive talent, the vastness of the dark, starry night skies, remote beaches, and the total range of things that can happen to an expertly piloted small sailboat alone out on an unforgiving ocean. The reader gets to meet many of the “characters” in the Anchorage, who mostly turn out to be honorable and fascinating, if often non-conforming, folks. You experience the Abacos, Miami Beach, Gibralter, the violent “horizontal Niagara” of Hurricane Andrew, the immense open ocean, and a host of other places, all described with (who would have guessed?) a great storyteller’s keen eye and a true gift for language.

To follow a nature

To step from the normal walk of life and stretch out to see where the unknown leads is admirable. It's not for everyone to do, but Dave's tales are an inspiration for anyone who long's for adventure; whether they desire the tangible act, or an intangible sense of it.

The characteristics of life under sail are almost indescribable unless you've lived it. Dave's tales brought me back to anchorages and passages with a breeze, and gale, in my face, and a taste of salt in the air - desire for the blue water returned. Aside from the comforts and amenities provided with a large bankroll, the only limit to life on a boat is land. Dave details the qualities, challenges, and character of that life with blunt, humorous, and vivid descriptions of adventure and encounters for all to enjoy.

We all have a tale to share, and I was captivated by The Blue Monk's.

Great reading and a gem of cultural anthropology, rollicking good sailor tales, and a cast of characters that would make Steinbeck proud. Fresh and clean in style with fully footnoted explanations of sailing terminology keeps the pace brisk and vivid for any reader to go seafaring and experience a vanishing epoch of life at anchor and " under weigh".

Great Fighters of the Second World War!

FAMOUS FIGHTERS OF WORLD WAR 2; ACES, COMBAT STORIES, FACT FILES is a comprehensive, visually delightful guide to 'the top 10 fighters of WW II.' A 2015 Coxy Media release, this Brit import tops off at 98 pages and sells for $15.99 in the colonies.

The 10 aircraft in question - the Bf 109, Hurri, Spit, Zero, FW 190, Corsair, P-51, P-47. Me 262 and Yak 3 - are presented in chronological order. Each warbird gets a well-illustrated write-up that includes development history, combat history, 'from the cockpit,' ace mini-profiles, timelines, specs, survivors, etc. Authors include Warren Thompson, Denis Calvert and so on.

The book gets an A+ for illustrations. It includes color profiles by John Weal, Chris Davey and Rolando Ugolini, combat artwork by Mark Postlethwaite and scads of b&w and color vintage and contemporary photographs, many of the color shots being done by John Dibbs.

I question one omission on the list: the Hellcat should have been included rather than the F4U. Admittedly, the Corsair had more sex appeal but the F6F won the naval war in the Pacific.

Bottom line: there's not a lot new in FAMOUS FIGHTERS OF WORLD WAR 2 but it's an informative, colorful, pleasing package. Recommended.

Michael Moniz spent his childhood living between the big city and the tranquil Azores islands of Portugal. Passed the toddler, short attention span test.

I bought this for my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter, because she is learning her alphabet, and she loves being read too. It is a little longer than most books I have read to her, so was not sure if her attention would hold. But, she loved it! She loves animals, and she especially loved Alex and Trudy. Fun, and imaginative story, and I felt it helped her with her letters. I highly recommend it.

My niece LOVED your book Ron!! She's 3 and after I was done reading it to her she asked if there were more Teacup Trudy books!! I have to say I also LOVE that it is all positive.. NO "grumpy" characters..no one misbehaving... LOVE IT and the Message for kids!! SO AWESOME!! Thanks!

My kids LOVED this book!

Very cute story about a little girl named Trudy who uses her "letters" from the alphabet to create friends and characters to play with. My 8 year old and 5 year old both found this book entertaining and fun. We love the use of the family dog, Alex, as well. Would definitely recommend this book to elementary age children and younger. Can't wait to see what other adventures await Teacup Trudy!

I tried other guides in the past but this one has been one of my favorites so far. Easy to read, easy to find what you are looking for. These people obviously did their research and love the sport of baseball. From sleepers to keepers to annual players to draft, this guide has what you are looking for. I follow each of them on twitter and I'm always able to get a response from them if I have a question or look for their suggestions. I'm glad i didnt waste my time or money on another guide. I just had my draft among my circle of friends and this guide helped me decide on when to take my desired players. Get this guide and look forward to taking home your League trophy.

Personally love fantasy baseball and I enjoy taking as much fantasy knowledge in like a sponge before draft. Compare and contrast with multiple types of guides and opinions on players. Best way to get a better feel for some uncertin player values. This guide has a different outlook on some players that you may not of looked at before so time will tell as most guides on how this year pans out. Without looking into the future seeing if it helped isn't posible so for now I'm content with the guide. Nice to see some average joe's poor so much time and effort into a guide going against the masses in fantasy sports guides.
