Douglas Boze has been hunting big game since about 12 years old. His passion for hunting bear has only increased throughout the years and he is always excited to talk to people about bear hunting, especially those that are new to it. Residing in Washington State, not far from his home town, he has been blessed with a wonderful wife Amy and step son Haydin. He enjoys all sorts of outdoor activity and encourages others to experience the joy and reward of hunting and fishing.

Dougs book is the real deal. As an archery hunter who has a Black Bear in the Pope and Young book, I found Doug's book to be accurate and full of information both the new and the experienced bear hunter can use. So much of bear hunting involves knowing where to find the areas where bears exist. One of the valuable features of Doug's book is his inclusion of detailed photographs. Study his stories, really focus on the details in his photographs, learn what he has to share, and you too will soon be finding bears in the woods. Many people go years and years and never even see a bear in the forest. I can fully attest the woods are full of bears. 'No Bait, Just Bears!' teaches you how to find them. And nothing is more exciting than large bears up close. I hope you too experience the exhilaration of meeting bears up close in the wild. John G. Cottone, PhD: Dr. John G. Cottone is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Stony Brook, NY. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from St. John’s University and previously earned a master’s degree in biopsychology from Stony Brook University. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed research publications, including articles and book chapters on topics in psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. He is the author of a 2013 self-help book entitled Who Are You? Essential Questions for Hitchhikers on the Road of Truth (Story Bridge Books) and has had vocational and avocational contributions to The New York Times and The Washington Post. He is also an avid baseball fan, a member of Red Sox Nation, and was a four-year scholar-athlete at Dowling College, where he pitched on the school’s baseball team. Jason Wirchin: Jason Wirchin earned his B.A. in Political Science, along with a Minor in Journalism, from Stony Brook University in 2010. He is currently a television news producer for News 12 The Bronx, and has also established himself as a digital content producer with the News 12 Networks. He has been published several times by both national and local papers, including The New York Times, New York Daily News and Newsday; and is a frequent caller to WFAN. Jason takes great pride in the history of our national pastime and is a religious fan of the New York Mets. Good for people who love baseball and all sports

I'm a big professional baseball fan, but the game has changed dramatically in my lifetime because of performance enhancing drugs. We were having some arguments around the family dinner table about who was the best hitter, the best pitcher, etc., but it was impossible to compare today's players to earlier players. My cousin sent me a copy of Z-Scores. I was afraid it would be over my head as far as statistics-talk, but it gives a perfectly understandable summary for lay people about statistics and how z-scores are a unique way to analyze sports performances. I also liked being able to compare baseball statistics to other sports. I hope they write more books about how z-scores can help compare, for example, college admissions people can compare grades and SAT scores to make it more fair to kids who live in bad school districts. I highly recommend this book.

I knew it! Pedro Martinez is the greatest pitcher of all time! This is a surprisingly easy read for a book about statistics. It also includes an interesting history of the game of baseball and how it's changed over the years. Perfect gift for the baseball fans in your life.

A surprisingly witty book

Finally a book that acknowledges statistics for baseball (amongst other areas) the right way. The fact that Babe Ruth hit twice as many home runs in 1920 vs.1919 yet, his 27 home runs in 1919 was considered a higher achievement really makes you think. Numbers are just numbers until you examine their true value. Differences across eras in baseball history contributed to there being wide discrepancies of statistical performances from era to era. This book really makes you rethink what you once thought. It was clearly written and easy to comprehend. I really enjoyed it.

Basic and helpful with some rough edges.

The concept covered in this book, shorts to power, helped me to solve a problem with a gas furnace just yesterday. It also inspired me to take another look at a strange wiring issue connecting and affecting three devices on three different circuit breakers.

The content is very basic, but sometimes that is all that is needed. It contains some unusual grammar and the content is a little repetitive. The book could use refinement, but it can be useful as is.

A shirt compendium of several of Jack London's works including a chapter from "The Sea Wolf". Not exactly what I expected. Some interesting bio material. Better off reading his complete short stories and his longer works. OK if all you want is a snapshot of some of his sea stories.

Greatly Enjoyed ! Why are there not more children's books being written like this ?

Imaginative and compelling read, greatly enjoyed by myself and my child. An original world of unique dangers and treasures, combined with a return to the illustrated chapter book format. These are hard to find, I was left wondering why there aren't more children's books like this on the market ?
Also, unlike some children's e-books I've read with my child, the painted illustrations in Cindercast look beautiful on my ipad, obvious care was taken for this to look good in digital format.

Wonderful Story with Incredible Artwork

CINDERCAST: A TALE OF TIDES by Michael Blackbourn is a wonderful, fascinating children's chapter book. It tells the story of Ollie, a tiny Seelie girl, and her brave companion, a crab named Snarz. Ollie is ten years old and a quarter-inch tall (which we're told is taller than most ten-year-old Seelie girls). She ventures out one day at low tide to explore the beach near her home. A thunderstorm arrives unexpectedly, kicking up the ocean waves amid flashes of lightning and rumbling thunder. Ollie and Snarz get swept out to sea as high tide comes in. They have to fight to keep themselves from drowning. Back on land, their struggles continue as they must use ingenious methods to evade birds and other predators and additional dangers such as spiderwebs.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. The story is wonderful. Ollie has many great qualities. She's kind, thoughtful, smart, inventive, loyal and brave — a lovable and admirable main character! CINDERCAST includes fascinating descriptions of things found in the natural world of a beach environment. The author writes in sentences that children will understand, while including technical terms that will expand their vocabulary and scientific knowledge, e.g. "bladderwrack seaweed," "laminaria seaweed," "periwinkle snails," and much more.

Included inside the book and on the book cover itself are stunning artistic drawings by the author, Michael Blackbourn, who's also an artist. He's actually a feature film visual effects artist who has worked on quite a few major films. (His film work can be found on IMDB.) Michael's artistic talent really shows in the incredible drawings he created for his CINDERCAST novel.

In addition to the natural world, Michael also writes about technology in CINDERCAST. The most important technological elements in the novel are tiny "cinderblocks" — or robotic cubes — found and used by the Seelies and upon which they cast magic to create contraptions or 'traptions.

I should mention that there are typos and minor punctuation and grammar errors throughout the book - not enough to detract from the wonderful story, but something that could easily be fixed through professional editing. I debated about rating this book with only 4 stars as a result; but the story and artwork are so impressive, I decided to go with a 5-star rating along with mention of the errors.

I read the paperback version of this book, but purchased both paperback and Kindle versions. The artwork shows up beautifully in both versions.

I'd love to see graphic novel and cartoon versions of this book. It would be great fun to have several formats in which to experience the incredible artwork and story of CINDERCAST.

Fun story!

Ollie is a Seelie. They are like humans (AKA UnSeelies), but really really small. They could fit on your pinkie fingernail. When Ollie got sucked in by a sea storm, she gets tossed, turned, and lost. She finds herself on an unknown beach, with only her best friend Snarz (a small crab) to help her. With spiders, seagulls, and angry crabs, including mysterious cubes called Cindercubes, will she ever make it home?

What I Thought- This was a nice book. Although the publisher says it’s Middle Grade, it could fit into Early Middle Grade/Late Early Chapter Book. A lot of obstacles pop up in the book, but there wasn’t as much plot development that I would have liked in a middle-grade book. The book doesn’t resolve the main problem – Ollie knows of a place to go, but doesn’t go there, but the story feels complete and leaves room for the second book. The book was well-written and Mr. Blackbourn has a fun writing style that is enjoyable to read. You really immerse yourself into the world of a traveling Seelie. I would be happy to read book 2.

A sure to be block buster

This book is well written and just draws you into the story. I had to fight my 16 year old daughter for the book. Everytime I went to go read the book it was missing because she had stolen it back to read. The author has a way with detail that gives you a visual that can not go wrong. This book covers the emotions, cheering when the good guys win, laughing when your sure they have lost their minds, and seeing yourselve right there on the first tee when the morning starts. This book is writen so well that I can't help but wonder when the movie will be made? What happens next, and what a great idea for a TV series. The author is gifted, this is not your everyday golf book. Look out Tin Cup, Chasing The Gator will soon be hot on your golf shoes.

This is a funny book. I swear some of these characters hang out at my local municipal course. This would be a great gift for any golfers you know who have a sense of humor. It may not help your game but you will find yourself laughing out on the course as you recall situations from Chasing the Gator.

This didactic story takes us through the rise of the plutocratic class as it traces Rolf's rise to great wealth and campaign for corporate control of the global economy. My only criticism is about some overly explicit explanations of the strategy behind the politics at play, but that would have required significantly more character and plot development. A manipulative daughter-in-law shows how to mislead a vulnerable journalist and an even more frustrated and vulnerable public under the direction of the wealthy man's dominating vision. Polo becomes not just a sport, but an entry point into the world of global domination. Soon it becomes apparent that Rolf justifies his rise to hard work, and he wishes to sell the notion that others can do well too. However, it is a path he chooses to remove leaving wealth, power, and global dominance to the plutocrates. Alas, even the powerful fail, but you'll need to read the book to learn how.

The troublesome part is that the story seems to be playing out before our eyes in the real world. Politics, think-tanks, corporate power, corporations as persons, gerrymandering, and influences of the wealthy on the political process have obvious parallels in this story. As some people in this story believed Polo was just a sporting game for the wealthy, it was merely a part of a very complex "systems thinking" strategy. I kept wanting to start drawing causal loop diagrams to help me understand the underpinnings of the political process both in the book and in real life. I still may do that.

I received this book through librarything.com member giveaway for a honest review. I really enjoyed this book, it gave some helpful tips. I will be using the tips that were given in this book. It was also a fun book to read.

Funny, practical, timely!

I received a review copy of this book and have to say I really enjoyed it. It's beautifully put together, easy to read, and funny. The focus on feeling happy with yourself, having fun, and making the most of what you have, might sound like info you've heard a hundred times, but the author's insights into the pressures of our current beauty-obsessed culture, coupled with her fashion stylist know-how and practical tips really make this book a gem (if you'll excuse the pun). I consider myself well groomed, but I've learned a lot about wardrobe, presentation and how to truly let go of caring about other people's opinions. As I said, I got this review copy for free, but I would have paid money for it. I'll be referring back to it again and again. This book is a keeper.
